Update from SLIS on the East Coast

The faculty on the East Coast keeps busy even when folks do not hear from us!

Dr. Henrietta M. Smith is finishing her third time as a committee member for the selection of the prestigious Caldecott Award. It is a National Award for the best illustrated picture book published by an illustrator who resides in the United States. The announcement will be made at ALA Mid-winter Conference in Boston.

Even as that committee appointment comes to an end, Dr. Smith has already been invited to be a panelist on an ALSC panel tracing the library trail of seasoned librarians, their commitment activities, and their achievement over the years.  This program will be held during ALA Annual Conference in Washington D.C. in June 2010.   Addtionally, the outgoing Caldecott Committee will celebrate with the illustrators in the winning and honor categories.

The East Coast program, physically 400 miles away from the SLIS main campus, is kept in close touch under the capable leadership of East Coast Director, Maria Treadwell.  She moves with seeming ease from setting up Orientation sessions, finding the most qualified adjunct for a particular course in the program, making arrangements for teaching  space across three counties, handling registration problems,  representing the Library School at College and University Career Day Fairs and so much more.  All is done with a quiet smile and no fanfare.  Thanks Maria for being there for all of us!
